Lessons from the yard

Varroa destructor

One of the most critical insights we’ve gained is that mites are not a seasonal nuisance, but a year-round biological pressure. Varroa remain active throughout the winter months feeding on winter bees fat bodies. The loss of lipid reserves can be catastrophic for the hive. We switched our hives to mite boards last year so we can monitor mites year-round. In the colder months take a picture of the board and examine later! We highly recommend & credit this book ~ it’s a good read.
